The Association of North American Directory Publishers is composed of reputable City Directory Publishers, organized for the general advancement of the Directory business. Any person, corporation or firm engaged in busi- ness as owner and publisher of a City Directory in the United States or Canada, who shall qualify as competent to gather information and compile a City Directory and furnish satisfactory references, is eligible to membership.

The objects of the Association are:

First. The advancement of the Directory business and the improvement of Directories by the interchange of ideas and the exchange of experienced employes.

Second. To provide protection to the public against fraudulent advertis- ing schemes which operate under the name of Directories, and to drive un- principled promoters of the same out of business.

Third. To provide permanent and profitable employment to competent, industrious and honest Directory canvassers and compilers.

Fourth. For the mutual protection and advancement of the established and prospective interests of all who may become members, by personal advice and assistance of members as may be mutually satisfactory, desirable or advisable, and by such other means as may, from time to time, be shown to be wise, proper and lawful.

All members of this association have subscribed to the following

STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

1. To consider first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every con- cern under such headings as best describe it, and to treat additional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what directories and reference media contain; to study public needs and make directories and reference media to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifications so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the directory and reference media be made to serve their fullest use as business and social reference books and directories of buyer to seller and seller to his market.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and advertising solely upon the merits of the publica- tion.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference, regarding circulation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its accessibility to seekers as well as on the number of copies circulated.

8. To co-operate with approved organizations and individuals engaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of directories and reference media in public service and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100.00 REWARD will be paid by the Association for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or "fake" Directory.

STUDY AND BECOME A

DOCTOR ? CHIROPRACTIC

Be one of the many ambitious men and women who are enrolling at the Clewell Chiropractic College. Join now, study for eighteen months and then write Doctor of Chiropractic after your name.

Chiropractic offers tremendous oppor- tunities for men and wonjen who are qualified to practice. It will give the opportunity that you have sought where- by you can go into business for yourself; can earn a good income; can have a standing in your community; can bene- fit suflfering humanity.

In every community there is a de- mand for one or more Chiropractors. In large cities there is a splendid field. This, therefore, is a good time to study Chiropractic.

Besides, it is not necessary for you to

leave San Diego to attend college. You can learn right here. You can attend the classes at the Clewell Chiropractic College, a regularly chartered institution that complies with all requirements re- garding courses of study, hours of study, etc. From the very beginning of your course you will have the benefit of a large clinic which will give you exper- ience immediately in palpation.

From the manner in which men and women are enrolling, it would appear that the current classes at the Clewell Chiropractic College will be the largest in the history of the institution. If you would be a member of the classes and take the first step toward becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic hand in your name tomorrow. Call at the college of- fice, 1570 Fourth street, corner of Cedar street, telephone Main 3743, or write for literature.

HEBRON HOME

FOR THE AGED

(Incorporated)

A HOME IN ALL THE NAME IMPLIES

A cheery, comfortable home with a congenial atmosphere and sympathetic care, where those of advanced years ma\^ find a haven of rest for their declining days that briefly describes the Hebron Home for Aged People.

This San Diego institution is advan- tageously located so that it commands a magnificent view of bay, ocean and sur- rounding country. This place is spick and span and there is an abundance of sunshine and fresh air through the rooms of the various buildings. The dining room is spacious and "homey", and the other rooms are clean and invit- ing. The Hebron Home for Aged Peo- ple is a home in fact as well as in name.

1825 Newton Ave.

Mrs. Emma Egbert Williams, the Founder and President, has given a life- time in caring for the aged and infirm and her years of experience eminently fits her for the exacting duties of her po- sition.

Associated with her are her husband, Hiram Williams and her two sons, Dow E. Williams and Hiram F. Williams and a carefully chosen staflf of assistants, whose loving, tireless care insures to residents of the Home those numberless services, so necessary to the comfort of those advanced in years.

While the Home is not a charitable in- stitution, the charges are so small as to be almost nominal and can be arranged for, either on a monthly basis or a one payment entrance fee, insuring care for life.

FACTS ABOUT SAN DIEGO

Prepared by

Publicity Bureau

SAN DIEGO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

San Diego, county seat of San Diego county, is situated six- teen miles north of the Mexican border on a beautiful bay of the same name. It is a typically modern city. The climate is one of the most equable and salubrius in the world, there being no ex- tremes of heat or cold. San Diego is most ideally situated. The site comprises a series of small valleys and hills, and the eleva- tions afford a panoramic view which is unexcelled. The placid waters of the bay, the waves of the Pacific and the distant moun- tains present a picture of which one never grows tired.

The citizens of San Diego are progressive, and in laying out the city have ever kept in mind the possibilities of future growth. Wide streets and boulevards obviate congestion and the large area embraced within the corporate limits makes possible the building of a great industrial, commercial and residential city.

The Bay of San Diego has an area of 22 square miles, is com- pletely land-locked and has a depth of 37 feet over the bar at low water.

In keeping with the growth of the community, the city and the United States Government have spent large sums on harbor im- provements. This expenditure provided a Municipal Pier, Ware- house, Administration Building, and 2600 feet of bulkhead, took care of a large amount of dredging and gave to the city 80 acres of valuable filled-in Tide Lands. The city still owns 1320 acres of tide lands a stupendous asset perhaps possessed by no other city in the world.

Perhaps no better evidence can be offered of San Diego's many and unusual advantages of location, climate, bay, harbor and gen- eral surroundings than is shown in the preferences extended by the Federal Government.

Briefly they are :

Camp Kearny U. S. Public Service Hospital No. 64.

U. S. Naval Base for Eleventh Naval District.

U. S. Naval Training Station.

U. S. Naval Hospital.

U. S. Marine Corps Base.

U. S. Naval Repair Base.

U. S. Army Aviation School Two Fields.

U. S. Naval Air Station.

U. S. Naval Coaling Station.

U. S. Naval Fuel Oil Station.

U. S. Quarantine Station.

Fort Rosecrans Coast Artillery.

U. S. Naval High Power Radio Station.

U. S. Naval Radio Station.

Training Port for Vessels of Pacific Fleet. According to high naval officers, San Diego is to be made a second Hampton Roads. The most modern facilities of all kinds are being installed.

84

The County of San Diego contains almost 2,700,000 acres, but as the eastern part is mountainous, not more than 500,000 acres are suitable for agricultural purposes. On the other hand these mountainous districts offer to the visitor quite as enchanting bits of scenery as can be found on the coast.

The western part of the county is divided into a series of irreg- ular terraces or plateaus. The lower, or coast terrace, practically frostless, comprises a number of valleys with intervening mesa lands. Next comes a series of higher valleys varying in elevation from 400 to 1500 feet. The third series includes the foothill dis- tricts, with numerous small valleys, nooks and glens with an ele- vation of 2500 to 4000 feet.

The city owns its water system which is valued at $8,000,000. The source of supply is the impoundment in reservoirs of the flow of the mountain streams, and the natural underground reservoir of the San Diego river adjacent to the city.

The present supply is adequate and can be largely increased when necessary. The yield from available sources is approximately 30 billion gallons per annum. The average daily consumption is 10 million gallons, supplied at a cost to the consumer of 8 cents per thousand gallons.

Of great importance to any city is the question of transporta- tion. The Santa Fe Railroad has long been established in this ter- ritory, affording facilities of this immense system. This road has expended in San Diego the sum of $500,000 in permanent improve- ments.

The San Diego and Arizona Railway was completed December 1, 1919, giving San Diego the shortest transcontinental railroad in the United States. The distance from San Diego to El Centro over the new line is 148 miles, thus bringing this city in direct rail communication with the fertile Imperial Valley and the highly productive areas of Arizona, New Mexico, and other parts of the Southwest. San Diego, with its splendid harbor and shipping fa- cilities, is the logical shipping and distributing center for the out- put of the great farming belts just east of the city.

San Diego County has many hundreds of miles of boulevards and roads, and is connected with Los Angeles via the Coast Route by a paved highway. The State Highway to Imperial Valley is in course of construction. The county is destined to become a "Mecca" for autoists, as its splendid roadways traverse some of the most interesting country from both an historical and scenic standpoint in Southern California.

In almost every part of the so-called back country accommo- dations can be had at most pleasing and desirable resorts. This permits of traveling leisurely or of remaining quietly in the one which best suits the individual taste. To those who desire to lo- cate permanently in a community where the standard of the school system is high, where church facilities are of the best, and where the means of recreation are varied and refined, San Diego offers much. To children and those advanced in years the city is especial- ly inviting, and for the business man with capital many opportun- ities exist.
